A Cairo criminal court has sentenced a cafe employee to seven years in prison for killing a patron in a popular cafe in Heliopolis during a dispute last February over the bill afterpatrons finished watchinga live football game for the Egyptian national team.

The court also ordered the owner and manager of the Keif cafe to pay EGP 10,000 ($560) in compensation to the father of the victim.

The 24-year-old victim, Mohamed Bayoumi, was struck with a chair and stabbed to death by the café employee after the owner locked clients inside until they pay their bills.

The killing of Bayoumi, who was watching the game with his fiancée, provoked outrage on social media.

The verdict can still be appealed.

Shortly after Bayoumi's murder, security forces raided and shut down over 30 of cafes in Cairo and Giza governorates over licensing violations.

The Keif cafe itself was also shuttered for various violations.
