Supporters of failed MP candidates call for dissolution of newly elected parliament
Outside a court hearing today on the case filed against the minister of interior and the head of parliament demanding that parliament is dissolved, several supporters of failed MP candidates demonstrated, chanting slogans urging the court to give the case its full dues.
The demonstrators who had gathered outside the Council of State included Muslim Brotherhood supporters as well as some of the supporters of Mortada Mansour, former MP candidate and ex-president of Zamalek Club. They called the election results "fraud" and demanded that parliament is dissolved.
Several of the MP candidates who lost in the last elections filed court cases in recent weeks demanding that the parliament is dissolved. The cases came following numerous courts deemed the election results void in several constituencies.
Opposition parties and groups expressed their shock when the NDP scored more than 85% of the seats in the parliamentary elections which were held in two stages on November 28 and December 5. The Brotherhood dropped its entire outgoing 88-seat parliamentary stronghold, and other opposition parties scored no more than a hand full of seats. Various opposition groups have declared that they will form a "shadow parliament" as an alternative, and the liberal Wafd party said it would form a "shadow government".
