Islamabad opts out of scheduled conference following deadly weekend raid by US that left two dozen Pakistani soldiers dead
German Chancellor Angela Merkel said she hoped Pakistan would change its mind about boycotting an upcoming conference in Bonn devoted to Afghanistan’s future.
Pakistan said earlier Tuesday that it would not attend the 5 December meeting in protest against a deadly weekend attack by US-led forces on its troops.
Merkel told reporters in Berlin that, while she has "understanding for their decisions," she is hoping that Germany can persuade Pakistan to reconsider it position.
"They should still understand that the Afghanistan conference is a very important one," she said, describing the event as “a very good opportunity to bring forward the political process."
“We hope that they [the Pakistanis] will review their decision," she added.
