Students at several Egyptian universities held protests on Sunday to denounce US President Donald Trump's decision to move the US embassy to Jerusalem, recognizing the city as Israel's capital

Egyptian students at a number of universities held on-campus protests on Sunday to denounce the US decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, chanting against Israel and carrying Palestinian flags.

At Al-Azhar University in Cairo, several hundred students organized a protest on campus attended by the university's presidentMohamed El-Mahrsawyand several professors. The students chanted "Down with Israel!" and some burned the Israeli flag.

Dozens of students at Ain Shams University also in Cairo held a protest to voice their exasperation, lifting banners reading "Jerusalem will always be a capital for the Palestinian state ... Jerusalem is Arab and Islamic."

The students also carried Palestine’s flags, while wearing the white-and-black checkered Palestinian keffiyeh headscarf, a prominent symbol of Palestinian pride.

According to state-owned news agency MENA, the students said their protest was the least that they could do to show their solidarity with the Palestinian cause.

The protest was also attended by the university’s president Abdel Wahab Ezzat, along with members of the university teaching staff and other employees.

Ezzat told MENA that his university – represented by students, professors and employees – stands side by side with the Palestinians, describing the Palestinian cause as one of importance to the whole Arab nation, not only the Palestinian people.

He added that the protest was proof that the “conscience of the free world rejects such unilateral decisions."

Students at Menoufiya University in the Nile Delta also held a protest as a show of anger at the decision, leading their protest with anti-Israel and pro-Palestine chants.

Sunday’s protests against the US decision are not the first by students in Egypt. On Thursday, the American University in Cairo’s Student Union organized an on-campus protest and march, lifting banners that showed support with Palestine.

On Wednesday, US President Donald Trump recognized Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, drawing a wave of condemnation and protests in the occupied territories and around the world.

In the Arab world, several protests rejecting the US decision took place in a number of countries including Lebanon and Jordan.
