Aida Muluneh is an award-winning photographer and the founder of Addis Foto Festival

Award-winning Ethiopian photographer Aida Muluneh, founder and managing director of Desta for Africa (DFA), will give a talk on photography in Ethiopia at Darb 1718 on 27 December.

Muluneh will talk about her photographic practice, mentored by African-American photographers, and her mission to provide balance in the portrayal of Africa and black people.

She will also talk about establishing DESTA (Developing and Educating Society Through Art) and the DFA, a social entrepreneurship company that works with governmental and cultural institutions, making use of images, education and cultural diplomacy.

Muluneh will also share her experience in teaching photography and establishing The Addis Foto Festival – the first international photo-festival in East Africa - as well as the challenges of developing the creative industry and acquiring foreign funding for cultural activities in Africa.

Born in Ethiopia in 1974, Muluneh spent much of her childhood between Yemen and England. After several years in a boarding school in Cyprus, she settled in Canada in 1985. In 2000, she graduated from Howard University in Washington, DC, majoring in Film. She later worked as a photojournalist with the Washington Post, and her work can be found in several international publications.

Aida’s work has been shown in South Africa, Mali, Senegal, Egypt, Canada, United States of America, France, Germany, England, China, and elsewhere. Her images are in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art, Hood Museum and the Museum of Biblical Art, all in the United States.

Muluneh won the European Union Prize in the Rencontres Africaines de la Photographie in Mali in 2007, in addition to the CRAF International Award of Photography in Spilimbergo, Italy in 2010.

She is considered an expert on photography from Africa, and has been invited to judge at several photography competitions, most notably the Sony World Photography Awards 2017 and the World Press Photo Contest 2017.
