The protest over the local shortage of gas cylinders was suspended when officials promised to meet their demands
Following almost two days of blocking the entrance gate of Abydos Temple in El-Balyana village near the upper Egyptian town of Sohag, protestors suspended their demonstration, left the site and allowed visitors to enter the temple.
The suspension came after Sohag Governorate’s secretary general met the protestors and promised them to meet all their demands.
Early on Monday, some 400 local residents of El-Balyana village blocked the Abydos temple entrance gate during their protests against a local shortage of butane gas cylinders, which had led to cylinders being sold on black market for LE50 (US$8.5) instead of LE5 (US$0.9).
Abydos Temple was built by 19th Dynasty King Seti I. It contains a long list of pharaohs from earlier dynasties in hieroglyphic writing. Known as the “Abydos Kings List,” it includes the names of numerous Egyptian pharaohs going all the way back to the First Dynasty.
The back of the temple contains an enigmatic structure, known as the “Osirion,” believed to have been connected with the worship of the god Osiris.
