A DNA sample extracted from a body retrieved from the Mediterranean in Alexandria on Monday has identified the deceased as Mohamed Hassan, a 21-year-old Alexandrian man who was hit by car on the city's Stanley Bridge last week, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

Hassan and another person fell off the bridge into the water after being hit by the vehicle at dawn. The other victim was rescued from the water.

The driver, a Menoufia University student, was arrested at the scene.

The victim's relatives and friends were unable to identify the body when it was retrieved on Monday due to advanced decomposition after spending nearly seven days in the water.

A misdemeanour court judge has ordered the 15-day detention of the driver pending investigation for involuntary manslaughter and injury, driving while intoxicated and damaging public property.
