The Egyptian national football team's assistant coach Ossama Nabih said on Thursday that he is confident that his side will go through the group stage in this summer's World Cup and qualify for the next round, affirming that the Pharaohs will surprise in the world tournament.

"Egypt is capable of surprising in the World Cup, and I am sure that we will reach the round of last16," Nabih told a TV programme on Thursday.

Egypt ended a 28-year World Cup drought last October when they reserved their place in the prestigious competition after securing their position at the top of their group in the qualifiers.

The team has been drawn in a tricky group with hosts Russia, Uruguay and fellow Arab country Saudi Arabia.

"I am confident that we will perform well in the World Cup," Nabih said.

"We realised many achievements in 2017. We reached the final of the African Cup of Nations and we qualified for the World Cup after 28 years of absence."

"Mohamed Salah was also named African player of the year and we won the best national team and best coach awards."

Egypt gained the lion's share in the CAF awards for 2017, as classy Liverpool winger Salah was named African player of the year while coach Hector Cuper was crowned with the coach of the year award.

Egypt was also selected as the best national team following their successful campaigns over the year.
