Ahly move top of Egyptian league with easy win over El-Geish

A dominant Ahly side strolled to a 2-0 victory over El-Geish to overtake Ismaily on top of the Egyptian Premier League table on Tuesday.

The Red Devils made five changes to the starting line-up that featured in the 1-0 Egyptian Super Cup win over Masry on Friday but the team worked in typically perfect harmony to ease past El-Geish for a fourth straight win.

Out-of-favour winger Mido Gaber, who made a rare start, headed home the opener seven minutes before the break and central midfielder Amr El-Sulaya ensured the win with a simple late finish.

Ahly's Egyptian international striker Marwan Mohsen, who has been absent since the African Cup of Nations in early 2017, made his long-awaited return from a serious knee injury after coming on as a substitute in the latter stages. He had a header saved off the line by the keeper.

Egypt's most successful outfit, who are eyeing a third straight league title and their 40th overall, moved top with 42 points, one ahead of second-placed Ismaily who played a game more. El-Geish are eighth on 25 points.

Ahly laid siege to El-Geish area from the very beginning, with their swift moves in the final third unsettling the defence.

Junior Ajayi volleyed straight into the keeper's hands after 11 minutes when he was picked out unmarked by a right-wing cross before playmaker Abdallah El-Said, one of Ahly's best performers of late, spurned a golden chance.

In the 35th minute, he curled a shot high over the crossbar with the goal at his mercy but Gaber made amends to give Ahly a deserved lead three minutes later.

Full-back Bassem Ali skipped past his challenger on the right hand side of the penalty area, cut inside and crossed with his weak right foot for Gaber to send a glancing header past the motionless keeper.

It was also a one-way traffic in the second half, with Ahly launching a wave after wave of attacks amid little resistance from El-Geish.

They had a penalty claim controversially waved away by the referee when a defender appeared to handle the ball when making a sliding tackle to deny Moroccan striker Walid Azaro.

Another curling effort from El-Said was tipped over by the keeper but Ahly finally made the points safe in the 78th minute.

Azaro fed the overlapping El-Said after El-Geish gave away possession in midfield and the Egyptian international crossed low for El-Sulaya to tap into the empty net at the far post.
