Six terrorists killed in shootout with police in North Sinai: Egypt's interior ministry
Ahram Online , Tuesday 23 Jan 2018

Egypt's interior ministry said Tuesday that six terrorists were killed in a shootout with police during a raid on a militant hideout in North Sinai.

Security forces tracked a group of terrorists who plotted to increase attacks against security forces as the country celebrates national police day on Thursday, the ministry said in a statement.

Police forces then raided the terrorists' hideout, which had been used as a base for staging attacks in the North Sinai capital of Arish, the ministry added.

Six terrorists were killed as security forces exchanged fire with militants.

Egypt has been fighting Islamist militants based in the northern part of the Sinai Peninsula in recent years.

Militants have mainly targeted police and army personnel in bombings and shootings, but have also targeted civilians over the past year.

Earlier on Tuesday, Egypt’s army also said it had killed two dangerous extremists in North Sinai ahead of a plot to carry out a terror attack against the forces.
