Ahram Online, Saturday 3 Feb 2018

Egypt's National Election Authority (NEA) said on Friday evening it has not received any objections on eligibility grounds from the two presidential candidates, Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, the incumbent president, and Moussa Mostafa Moussa, the head of Ghad Party.

The deadline for objections passed Friday aftermoon, NEA deputy head Mahmoud El-Sherif said in an official statement.

The NEA had set Thursday, 1 February, and Friday, 2 February, as dates for hopefuls who submitted candidacy requests to the authority to file challenges against the credentials of other candidates.

The authority published Wednesday the initial list of presidential candidates— Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and Moussa Mostafa Moussa— on the front pages of state owned Al-Ahram and Al-Akhbar newspapers.

The NEA revealed Wednesday that President El-Sisi presented 549 endorsements from MPs and 161,707 citizen signatures to the authority to qualify as a candidate, while Moussa submitted endorsements from 20 MPs.

Hopeful candidates must submit at least endorsements from 20 MPs or 25,000 from citizens to be leigible to run for president.

On Tuesday, the authority is scheduled to notify ineligible candidates— if any— of its decision after reviewing documents submitted for candidacy requirements.

Egypt's 2018 presidential elections are set to be held 26-28 March.
