Ashraf Abdel Ghaffour condemns violent dispersal of Cabinet office sit-in but won't resign from SCAF-appointed advisory council

Head of the actors’ syndicate Ashraf Abdel Ghaffour has said he won’t resign from the advisory council – formed to assist the ruling military junta (SCAF) until a new president is elected next year – until he sees it is not fulfilling its aims.

In a statement to the Arabic language Ahram Gate news portal he said the council had suspended its activities until the violence against protesters halted and the families of martyrs were compensated.

“We have yet to decide how to fulfil these demands and of course all the council members and I have no aims but the welfare of the country, which compels me to maintain my membership of the council,” he said.

The council should have been established and a constitution written nine months earlier, he added.

“The council was established to restore trust between SCAF and the people, especially the youth. However, the council has faced problems from the beginning, particularly in the light of current events,” he said.
