Cairo Criminal Court handed down Saturday jail sentences ranging from three to five years to 13 lower ranking policemen over social and economic protests in 2015.

The defendants can still appeal the decision.

The prosecution charged the defendants with "inciting against the interior ministry, and committing incitement crimes to obstruct work inside the workforce, and joining an outlawed group."

In 2015, hundreds of low ranking policemen went on strike in the Nile Delta’s Sharqiya governorate to demand better working conditions and financial incentives.

A security source at the time linked the protests to the banned Muslim Brotherhood.
