Former Egypt striker Emad Meteb will join Maqassa on a free transfer after ending a brief loan spell in Saudi Arabia, the Egyptian Premier League club announced on Tuesday.

"Maqassa … reached an agreement with ex-Ahly striker Emad Meteb to join the team for one year," the club said in a statement, according to local media.

"Maqassa made that signing upon the request of coach Talaat Youssef."

Meteb's move to Maqassa will bring to an end a glittering career with Cairo giants Ahly, the club where he made his name.

He made his first-team debut at Ahly in 2003 and went on to lead the club to a host of titles, including eight Egyptian Premier League titles and three Champions Leagues.

A fan favourite, the 35-year-old has played a bit-part role for the last two seasons after struggling for form, having fallen down the pecking order at Ahly. He joined Saudi Arabia's Al-Taawoun on a six-month loan deal last January but failed to score any goals.

Meteb was also a key player for Egypt, scoring 25 goals in 61 appearances and leading them to three straight African Nations Cup titles in 2006, 2008 and 2010.
