Egypt's Minister of Defence Sedky Sobhi said in Moscow that current events in the Middle East are forcing the Egyptian government to modernize and upgrade the Egyptian armed forces, the Egyptian army said in a statement on Tuesday.

Sobhi, who returned to Cairo on Tuesday, travelled to Moscow with Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry for a day of 2+2 talks on Monday with their Russian counterparts.

The Egyptian defence minister and his Russian counterpart Sergei Shoygu discussed their countries' ongoing military cooperation and how it could be expanded, according to an Egyptian armed forces' statement about the visit.

Sobhi and Shoygu also discussed recent developments in the Middle East.

Shoygu said that Russia was keen to develop cooperation with Egypt's armed forces and stressed the importance of Egypt's role in the region.

According to the statement, technical discussions concerning that cooperation will take place at an upcoming meeting of the Joint Egyptian-Russian military committee.
