Egypt's weather forecasters expect rainfall in several parts of the country on Saturday, following a week-long heatwave that saw temperatures soar to over 40 degrees Celsius.

Rain is expected in the capital Cairo, the Nile Delta governorates and along the country's northern coasts, the Egyptian Meteological Authority said in a statement on Friday.

The heatwave started to subside on Friday, with temperatures predicted to gradually drop over the next three days by an average of 4 degrees in Cairo.

On Saturday, Cairo is expected to see a high of 35 and low of 24, while Egypt's coastal city of Alexandria expects a high of 29 degrees and a chilly low of 21.

The Red Sea resort cities of Hurghada and Sharm El-Sheikh, both popular tourist destinations, will see highs of 37 and 38 and lows of 26 and 27 respectively.

Temperatures will continue to drop by another 2 degrees on Sunday in Cairo and other parts of the country.
