The cabinet of Egyptian Prime Minister Sherif Ismail submitted its resignation to President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi on Tuesday, a presidency statement read.

"Prime Minister Sherif Ismail submitted the resignation of the government to the president of the republic," presidential spokesman Bassam Rady wrote on his official Facebook page.

In a separate statement, Rady said El-Sisi met with Ismail on Tuesday and asked his cabinet to "continue to perform its duties and responsibilities until a new government is formed."

The move by the cabinet is routine as a new government is expected to be formed after El-Sisi was sworn in for a second term three days ago.

Ismail took office in September 2015. The last reshuffle of his cabinet took place in January and included the addition of four new ministers.
