Egypt finished fifth out of the 25 competing nations at the 18th Edition of the Mediterranean Games, whose closing ceremony was held on Sunday night in Tarragona, Spain.

A fighting show from Egypt's boxing team was the highlight of the competition's closing days, as Walid Mohamed, Abdelrahman Abdelgawwad and Yousry Hafez gained a gold apiece in the categories of -69kg, -81kg and -91kg on Saturday respectively.

These, on top of Ramadan Darwish's gold for men's 90-100kg judo on Friday brought Egypt's total number of medals in the competition to 48, securing the country's finishing rank of fifth place.

Farida Osman, the first Egyptian national to win a medal in an international swimming contest finished sixth in the Mediterranean Games' individual rankings, with her collection of two golds and one silver medal.

Other notably strong performances came from Egypt's boxing team who gained three gold medals, with Egypt's first female Olympic medallist in any discipline, Sarah Samir, who competes under the name Sarah Ahmed, gaining two golds for weightlifting, backed by a further seven golds from the men's weightlifting cohort.

The 19th edition of the Mediterranean Games will be held in Oran, Algeria in 2021.
