Egypt's Administrative Control Authority ordered the arrest on Monday of the head of the country’s customs authority on bribery and corruption charges, Al-Ahram Arabic website reported.

Egypt’s highest anti-graft agency said in a statement that the head of the customs authority had received bribes from some customs agents in return for allowing them to smuggle banned goods.

The statement also said that the head of the customs authority had directed his subordinates to issue fake reports to reduce fines for goods that had been seized in several cases related to smuggling.

The country’s anti-corruption authorities have been waging a campaign targeting high-level corruption in recent years.

Authorities arrested the governor of the Nile Delta province ofMenoufiyain January, and the deputy governor of Alexandria in August, both on corruption allegations.

In 2015, the ACA arrested then-minister of agriculture Salah Helal on charges of corruption. He was sentenced to 10 years in prison in 2016.

The corruption watchdog Transparency International ranked Egypt 108th in its worldwide index in 2016.
