Nine people were injured early Monday in a car explosion near the on-ramp of 6 October Bridge in the Dokki area of Cairo, Egypt's health ministry announced.

Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said that some of the injured were transferred to the nearby Agouza Hospital while others asked to be transferred to a private hospital in the Mohandiseen neighbourhood.

Firefighters put out the resulting fire that extended to nearby cars.

A security source told state agency MENA that the car caught fire "due to a circuit problem."

According to earlier media reports, at least four vehicles, including a minibus, were charred in the fire which was preceded by an explosion that rocked Dokki and Agouza neighbourhoods.

According to eyewitnesses, a car exploded, leading two other cars to be set ablaze. A minibus coming from behind collided with the cars and caught fire.
