Al-Hilal issues special edition commemorating 150th birthday of founder and literary icon Gorgy Zeidan
Monthly Egyptian culture periodical Al-Hilal, published by the iconic publishing house of the same name, is currently celebrating founder Gorgy Zeidan’s 150th birthday. The magazine’s January issue includes several articles about Al-Hilal’s leading role in Egyptian cultural life, as well as photos chronicling important episodes in Egypt’s history in the century and a half since the magazine’s launch in September of 1892.
Gorgy Zeidan (1861-1914) lived an interesting life, abandoning his studies at Cairo University’s faculty of medicine due to his passion for literature. The latest issue of the magazine also includes an article about Zeidan’s influence on the historical novel genre and his early criticisms of Zionism and Turkish culture, in addition to some of his early writings.
The January issue also features several reprinted articles penned by prominent Egyptian and Arab writers of yesteryear, such as Michael Naeema, Abbas El-Akkad, Abdel-Rahman El-Rafei, Khairy Shalaby and Anton El-Gameel, among others. The latest issue also includes a handful of articles about Al-Hilal by prominent writers Ahmed Ibrahim El-Fakheih and Hussein Nassar.
