A criminal court has sentenced a former Suez governorate official to three years in prison for soliciting bribes in a case that dates back to September 2017.
The court sentenced Ali Mahmoud, the former general-secretary of Suez governorate, for offering businessmen secret information in exchange for a bribe.
According to the prosecution, Mahmoud asked for EGP 100,000 and a Rolex watch in exchange for revealing the estimated value of a tender for government land valued at EGP 188 million.
Another defendant in the case has been sentenced in absentia to three years in prison.
The two businessmen from whom Mahmoud solicited the bribe reported the crime to authorities and testified against him in the case.
