The Embassy of India in Cairo organised commemorative events to mark the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi


The Embassy of India in Cairo organised on Tuesday commemorative events to mark the 150thbirth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.

The celebration took place at the Hanager Arts Centre at the Cairo Opera House.

The event began with brief remarks from India's ambassador to Egypt Rahul Kulshreshth, followed by remarks from special guests from the embassy, including Khaled Sarwat, the assistant foreign minister for Asian affairs, Heba Youssef, the first undersecretary for foreign cultural relations at the Ministry of Culture for Egypt, and Mohamed Hegazy, the former Egyptian ambassador to India.

Ambassador Kulshreshth talked to the audience about Gandhi’s life, principles, and the close connection he shared with the Egyptian people during his brief visit to Egypt in 1931. The visiting dignitaries also shared their views on Gandhi and the relevance of his principles in today’s world.

The guests were also treated to a sampling of vegetarian Indian dishes. The event was well attended by Egyptian government officials, diplomats, media personnel, members of the Indian community, and friends of India in Egypt. There was wide media coverage of the event. Cairo Radio, in its morning broadcast, carried a live interview with the ambassador, as well as a feature on Mahatma Gandhi in the morning bulletin of its Urdu service.

Kulshreshth, accompanied by the guests, garlanded the bust of Mahatma Gandhi and released the commemorative stamps of Gandhi issued by the Indian government's Department of Post.

The events that followed included a video presentation of the song “Vaishnav Jan To”, performed by the Egyptian band Zai Zaman and singer Reem Ezz, and the inauguration of an exhibition and LED projection on the life and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi. The LED projection was based on the theme “Relevance of Bapu’s Message in a Contemporary World.”

In addition to the screening of the film in the hall of the Hanager Arts Center, the movie was also projected on a screen outside at night for maximum visibility.
