Liverpool’s ‘excellent’ Salah needs seven or eight years to be compared with Aguero: Guardiola

Manchester City Pep Guardiola believes that Liverpool’s star winger Mohamed Salah still needs seven or eight years to be compared to City's star Sergio Aguero, but the Egyptian international can return to his scoring ways in the future.

"He [Salah] is younger and it was his first year back in England since his time at Chelsea, so we will see in the future," Guardiola was quoted as saying by Sky Sports just hours ahead of City's visit to Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

"But a guy who has the quality to score 50 goals in a season always has that quality. But football is all about ups and downs,” he added.

The Pharaohs star has scored just three goals in his first seven Premier League games this season, with question marks hanging over his ability to reproduce the form that saw him finish as the competition's leading scorer with a record 32 goals last term.

The former Atletico Madrid striker Aguero is currently City’s all-time goal scorer with 148 top-flight goals, 111 more than Salah, who has scored 37 in the Premier League so far; 35 with Liverpool and two with Chelsea.

Despite the big gap, Guardiola believes that the 26-year-old Salah just needs more time to shine in the coming years.

"Salah remains an excellent player and will score goals in the future,” the coach explained.

"Sergio has scored a lot of goals but there were periods when he didn't score goals.

"Over how many years did Sergio score all those goals, eight or nine years? For Salah it was the first one so we will see in seven or eight years,” he concluded.

Liverpool are joint leaders with Manchester City on 19 points from seven games.
