Art Alert: Multidisciplinary event Tashweesh channels feminist voices
Ahram Online, Monday 5 Nov 2018
The series of events will open with a concert and a film screening at the Goethe Institute

Tashweesh, is a multidisciplinary event organised by the Goethe Institute in Cairo which opens on 9 November, bringing feminist voices from Arab countries and Europe.

Running for six days, the event aims to stimulate conversations on feminism, shake up gender stereotypes, and act as a platform for knowledge exchange through a diverse programme of music concerts, theatre and dance performances, talks and lectures, slam poetry, film screenings, and video art.

The opening will feature a musical performance by Egyptian musician Balqeis and a screening of the 2008 film Wa Waila (Oh Torment) by Kuwaiti director Monira Al Qadiri.

Balqeis blends indie music, rock, deep house and oriental remixes in her work. She often collaborates with women and joined projects such as the X women project and the soundtrack for Moghtarebat film.

Al Qadiri's film is a surreal music video based on an old Kuwaiti folk song. With tragedy and self-pity at the centre of the entrancing lyrics, the film is about lost love, displacement, gender identity, and death.

Programme:
Opening on 6 November
Goethe Institut, 7 Hussein Wassef St., Dokki, Cairo
