Al-Ahram Weekly, Friday 9 Nov 2018

EGYPT’s Olympic weightlifter Mohamed Ihab hit for the cycle, winning all three medals at the 2018 IWF World Weightlifting Championships currently being held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, until 10 November.

In the new -81kg weight category, the mighty Egyptian clinched the gold medal in the snatch, setting a new world record when he lifted 174kg. Ihab, the 2016 Olympic Games bronze medalist, then added a bronze medal in the clean and jerk and a silver in the total.

Altogether, 604 athletes from 88 countries are in Ashgabat in the first world championships to be held after the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) changed its weight classes which forced the nullification of all world records.

Events are taking place at the Martial Arts Arena, one of the facilities at the Olympic Complex that has a rich sporting history.
