A man pleaded guilty on Wednesday to the rape and murder of an Egyptian-American teenager in the United States in 2017 in Washington, according to media reports.

The 25-year-old suspect, Darwin Martinez Torres, pleaded guilty to the capital murder and rape of 17-year-old Nabra Hassanen as part of a deal with the prosecutor to avoid death penalty.

Under the terms of the deal, Torres will serve life in prison.

In June 2017, Hassanen was kidnapped, beaten and killed after she and her friends were chased near their mosque in Virginia.

Virginia police said at the time that the murder was not a hate crime.

In statements to reporters on Wednesday, the victim's father said that he still believes that his daughter was attacked and killed because she was Muslim.
