Four people died and 26 others were injured in a road accident in Beni Suef governorate in Upper Egypt on Monday morning.

The accident took place when a microbus, a truck belonging to the Beni Suef security directorate, and seven cars collided due to low visibility.

The injured included an officer, three conscripts and an arrested person, who were on their way to Cairo.

Deadly road accidents take place on a near daily basis in Egypt, which is notorious for poor road safety, badly maintained infrastructure, and loosely enforced traffic regulations.

However, Egypt has allocated millions of pounds on developing and expanding road networks in recent years.

The country's official statistics agency said in April that more than 11,000 road accidents took place in Egypt in 2017, down from around 15,000 accidents the previous year.
