Art Alert: Egypt’s French Institute commemorates Youssef Chahine with film and live music
The commemoration runs in parallel with the French Institute's programme titled Sustainable Cities
The French Institut in Cairo and Alexandria will mark the 10-year anniversary of the death of Youssef Chahine with Cineconcert, screening his film Bab El-Hadid (Cairo Station) with a concert of it’s musical score.
In Alexandria, the event will be held 12 December, while the Cairo event will be 13 December.
The Neirida Trio & Zero ft. Stephen Besse will perform the first 20 minutes of Cairo Station’s score, followed by the film’s screening with French subtitles.
Chahine's 1958 drama is among his best known films, starring himself alongside Hend Rostom and Farid Shawqy. It was screened in the 8th Berlin International Film Festival where it was nominated for the Golden Bear.
The event is also part of the second edition of the French Intitute’s programme ‘Sustainable Cities,’ which runs at it’s branch in Mounira and at the Townhouse Gallery between 13 and 15 December, under the theme 'Re-writing Heritage / Documenting the Present.'
