Egypt's experimental musician Maurice Louca announces new album

Louca's new album, Elephantine, will be released in February 2019


Egyptian experimental musician Maurice Louca has announced the upcoming release of a new album, titled Elephantine, on 1 February 2019.

According to the official press release, in Elephantine Louca"guides a 12-piece ensemble through a panoramic 38-minute odyssey, which he describes as his most ambitious project yet."

Louca's first solo album Garraya was released in January 2011 on Cairo's 100Copies music label. This was followed by Salute the Parrot (2014) and a collaborative album Lekhfa in which he worked as a trio with Maryam Saleh andTamer Abu Ghazaleh.

Elephantine, which iscomposed, arranged and produced by Louca, includes six tracks: The Leper, Laika, One More for the Gutter, In the Palm of a Ghost,Elephantine and El-Khawaga.

Elephantine will be released on vinyl, CD, digital streaming and download via US-based label Northern Spy and European label Sub Rosa. It was recorded in Stockholm in August 2017 at Stureparken Studios by Ronny Lahti, mixed by Adham Zidan and mastered by Heba Kadry.

The album features Tommaso Cappellato (drums/percussion), Ozun Usta (drums/percussions), Elsa Bergman (bass), Pasquale Mirra (vibraphone), Piero Bittolo (baritone sax/alto sax/bass flute), Anna Högberg (alto sax), Rasmus Kjærgård Lund (tuba), Isak Hedtjärn (clarinet/bass clarinet), Nadah El-Shazly (vocals), Natik Awayez (oud), Ayman Asfour (violin) along with Louca (guitar/piano).

The album's cover is designed by Egyptian visual artist Maha Maamoun who already contributed to Louca's Salute the Parrot. Executive producer is Sarah El-Miniawy.
