Art Alert: Six days of contemporary dance at Cairo’s Jesuit center
Ahram Online, Tuesday 18 Dec 2018
The Platform is a collection of 3 dance performances, from the Cairo Contemporary Dance Company’s professional training program

El-Nahda Centre’s theatre will host three performances from the MAAT-CCDC Contemporary Dance School, starting on Thursday.

Under the title of “The Platform,” the performances “The Bubble,” “Again and Again and Again,” and “Fluttering” are short-format, zero-budget productions by the students and alumni of the dance school.
The performances question content and form. Each runs for 25 minutes.

The Bubble is choreographed by Shady Abdelrahman and performed by Ahmed Maraie, to a musical excerpt from Oum Kalthoum. Abdelrahman’s performance deals with the concept of the bubble - the isolated world we create for ourselves, with the things we love selectively. In this bubble we can avoid conflicts and judgements, and we may also find solutions.

Again and Again and Again is choreographed and performed by Islam Elnebishy and Islam El-Araby. It explores the relationship between two bodies that share the same space.

“Each one searches for what is theirs – and what is thrust upon them by the other. Each one reacts differently, accepts or rejects the other, interacting and being influenced by them at times, and being forced upon them at other times,” the description reads.

Choreographed by Ibrahim Abdo, Fluttering looks at dance as a means of resistance to the scarcity of opportunities and rush of daily life.

There will be a Q&A with choreographers and dancers after each performance.

MAAT Contemporary Dance Company was founded in 1999 by dancer and choreographer Karima Mansour, and is now being reintroduced in a new format that expands its scope.

Programme:
The performances run from 20 to 26 December, except 23 December, at 8pm
El-Nadha - Jesuit Culture Center, Cairo, 15 El-Mahrany Street, El-Fagalah, El-Azbakeyah, Cairo
