Ahly announced Saturday that they have tabled an offer to sign Al Ain’s Egyptian winger Hussein El-Shahat in the January transfer window.
The Cairo giants were reportedly in talks to sign the Egyptian international, but they have refrained from making any public comments over the matter.
Ahly said in an official statement that they have sent a formal offer to UAE club Al Ain, without disclosing financial details.
The 26-year-old took part in 12 league matches this season, scoring six goals and providing four assists.
He also shone during Al Ain's surprise run to the Club World Cup final earlier this month, scoring one goal and producing some superb displays.
He was unlucky not to score in the 4-1 final defeat by European champions Real Madrid as he had a shot cleared off the line by Sergio Ramos after a fine individual effort.
Hussein’s brother and agent, Mohamed El Shahat, has recently told Egyptian media that Al Ain have already received offers from European and other Gulf clubs to acquire the player’s services this winter.
The agent hinted that his brother is leaning towards joining a European club, denying any knowledge of rumors that an investor is supporting Ahly with $4.5 million to seal Hussein's deal.
El-Shahat left Egypt’s Maqasa to join Al Ain in July 2018 in a deal estimated at $3 million.
Ahly lie seventh in the table with 23 points from 11 matches, 15 behind leaders and arch rivals Zamalek who played four matches more.
