Egypt defender Elmohamady dropped from Aston Villa line-up after recent flops

Egypt international full-back Ahmed Elmohamady has been dropped from Aston Villa’s starting line-up against Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday after coming under fire from the club’s fans following a string of disappointing performances.

The 31-year-old has been a regular starter for the Villans since joining them in June 2017, but has had some mishaps over the past few weeks.

He scored an own goal against Preston last weekend to draw away their lead and concede a 1-1 draw at the end of time.

Ten days ago against Championship leaders Leeds United, the experienced defender was at fault for two of the visitors’ goals, including Kemar Roofe's injury-time winner 3-2.

And two weeks ago he conceded a rash penalty against Stoke City as Villa were held to a 2-2 draw.

As a result, the player has come under fire from the fans, who want him out during the January transfer window, to follow his mentor Steve Bruce who moved to Sheffield Wednesday last summer.

"Elmohamady costing Villa points game after game," tweeted Shauni, an Aston Villa fan.

Bruce brought Elmohamady to Sunderland and the Premier League in 2010 and since then has hired him for all his teams.

“I thought he was one of our better defenders today. He was a bit low on confidence after the Stoke and Leeds games -- and in the first 20 minutes of the Swansea game it was difficult for him.

“But he grew into that game and did very well. He did very well today, too," Aston Villa coach Dean Smith said during the post-game press conference.

However, Elmohamady, who has made 19 Championship appearances as a starter, netting two goals and making four assists, has been left out of the starting XI against QPR.
