Egypt’s foreign ministry says it is following up on investigations into the murder of an Egyptian national in Jordan, adding that his body was flown back to Cairo on Wednesday.

Abdel-Gawad Ali, 30, died on Tuesday after a Jordanian stabbed him in the neck and head during a quarrel earlier this week in the northern city of Irbid. Local media reported that the knife’s blade broke off in the victim's head, publishing images of an x-ray and the blood-stained blade.

Ali's brother was quoted as saying that there was no apparent reason for the row, adding that his brother did not have any personal enmity with the attacker.

The foreign ministry said in a statement on Wednesday that it is following up on the case in coordination with Jordanian authorities.

The assailant has been arrested by Jordanian authorities, according to the spokesman of Egypt's Ministry of Manpower.

This is the latest in a number of similar attacks on Egyptian expatriates in Jordan over the past few years.

In December 2017, an Egyptian national was beaten to death by a Jordanian grocery shop owner. The assailant later turned himself in.

Around 1.1 million Egyptians reside in Jordan, according to data published by Egypt's official statistics agency CAPMAS in mid-2018.
