Art Alert: Tahrir Cultural Centre opens with exhibition by Huda Lutfi and Sherin Guirguis

The newly established centre will inaugurate with both exhibitions in parallel


The newly established Tahrir Cultural Centre will open with a double exhibition curated by Shiva Balaghi, featuring Huda Lutfi and Sherin Guirguis on 6 February.

Lutfi’s exhibition is titled When Dreams Call for Silence and marks her first showcase at the American University in Cairo (AUC) in 20 years. She started her artistic career at the AUC when she was a professor during the 1990s -- a period that lasted for 25 years.

Guirguis’s work, titled Bint Al-Nile (Daughter of the Nile), is her first in Egypt and centres on famous Egyptian feminist Doria Shafik.

Lutfi -- a cultural and feminist historian by professional training -- has had her work widely exhibited in Egypt and internationally, including galleries in the UAE, the USA, Austria, Singapore and Germany.

Guirguis is an associate professor of the Practice of Fine Art and vice dean of faculty at the University of Southern California. Her art has also been shown in Dubai, Sharjah, and Venice.

Shiva Balaghi is the current senior advisorto the president and the provost of the AUC for the arts and cultural programmes.

Balaghi is a cultural historian, with a focus on the visual arts of the Middle East. For nearly two decades, she taught history and art history at New York University and Brown University, becoming one of the first professors to introduce contemporary Middle Eastern art into the American university curriculums.
