Fifth-seeded Amr Shabana made it to the final eight of this year’s J. P. Morgan Tournament of Champions currently taking place in New York after defeating Colombian qualifier Miguel Angel Rodriguez 3-2 (11-6, 11-8, 7-11, 4-11, 11-8).

The holder of two titles, Shabana will take on third-seeded Frenchman Gregory Gaultier.

Seventh-seeded Mohamed El-Shorbagy won 3-2 against Australian Cameron Pilley (11-6, 9-11, 11-8, 6-11, 5-11) in round two of the $115,000 prize tournament at Grand Central Terminal.

El-Shorbagy’s younger brother Marwan, the 18-year old world junior champion, was the surprise of the tournament, defeating England’s Tom Richards 2-3 (11-9, 4-11, 11-7, 6-11, 10-12) to book a place in the quarterfinals, where he will meet Daryl Selby.

It was not a lucky tournament for qualifier Pharaoh Mohammed Abbas, however, who was stunned by second-seeded James Willstrop 3-0 (8-11, 10-12, 2-11).
