Nigerian forward Ajayi extends Ahly contract to 2022

Nigerian forward Junior Ajayi has signed a new contract that will keep him at Ahly until January 2022, the club announced on Monday.

The 23-year-old forward joined Ahly in the summer of 2016 from Tunisian side Club Sfaxien for a fee of $2.5 million.

Ajayi has helped the Cairo giants to two league titles in 2017 and 2018, a Super Cup in 2018 and reaching the final of the African Champions League twice in 2017 and 2018.

He has established himself as a key figure in Ahly’s squad as he scored a tally of 24 goals and made 19 assists in 81 games in all competitions.

The natural winger has been often deployed in a more central role to make up for the striker injury blow at Ahly.

He has himself returned from a lengthy injury that kept him away since August until December to score 3 goals in 8 appearances so far.

Ajayi is one of four foreign players in Ahly’s squad this season alongside with Moroccan forward Walid Azaro, Tunisian left back Ali Maaloul and Angolan winger Geraldo.

Ajayi’s contract was set to expire in summer 2020 but he has committed his future to two more years.
