Ahly’s Uruguayan tactician Martin Lasarte said that the club cannot ask more of players other than winning games after the team’s 3-1 victory over Dakhleya in the Egyptian league on Wednesday.
“I am satisfied with the performance. We travel a lot and we play every four days. I can’t recall that I’ve ever dealt with similar league fixtures in my life,” the 57-year-old manager told Egyptian media.
Ahly had a number of their matches postponed during the first half of the season due to their participation in the last edition of the CAF Champions League, which they lost in the final against Tunisian side Esperance, resulting in the team’s current fixture congestion.
“Pyramids lost and Zamalek drew, and that created some pressure on us before the encounter, but we have to only focus on our game and everything will come after. It is a long way and we will keep doing what we are doing,” Lasarte added.
“We can’t ask the players for more other than winning. Asking for more would be unfair,” he concluded.
The defending champions are back on the hunt as blips from runners-up Pyramids FC and table-toppers Zamalek both in the same week sparked the competition at the top of the league table.
Ahly are currently 3rd in the standings on 45 points, the same as Pyramids, who sit in 2nd place on goal difference but have played three more games, while Zamalek still occupy the top of the table with 52 points, having played one more game than Ahly.
