EU Delegate to Egypt Ivan Surkos said that 24 presidents and prime ministers out of 28 European Union member states will come to Sharm El-Sheikh this week to attend first ever EU-Arab League Summit scheduled 24-25 February.

The summit will be chaired jointly by European Council President Donald Tusk and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi.

Surkos affirmed strong interest among European leaders to enhance cooperation with Arab neighbours during the summit.

The president of Cyprus, Nicos Anastasiades, will participate in the summit, Cypriot government spokesperson Prodromos Prodromou said in a statement.

UK Prime Minister Theresa May will meanwhile hold bilateral meetings with European Union leaders at the summit, a senior UK government official said late Wednesday.

On Wednesday, director-general for Asia, the Middle East and South America affairs at the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, Claudia Warning, said that German Chancellor Angela Merkel will take part in the summit.

The EU-Arab League Summit will bring together for the first time heads of states and governments from both sides.

Arab and European leaders will seek to strengthen Arab-European ties and address a wide range of issues and common challenges, including migration, border security and the situation in the region.
