Egypt's Sisi, Lebanon's Al-Hariri discuss electricity infrastructure, energy cooperation

Egypt's President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi has discussed with Lebanon's Prime Minister Saad Al-Haririelectricity projects, infrastructure and energy cooperation, according to a statement by Egyptian presidential spokesperson Bassam Rady.

The meeting came on the sidelines of the first Arab League-EU Summit in Sharm El-Sheikh.

The meeting tackled ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries and benefit from Egyptian expertise in a number of areas, including electricity projects, infrastructure and energy. There was also an agreement on the need to increase trade between Egypt and Lebanon and to boost the size and scope of mutual investments.

President El-Sisi and Prime Minister Al-Hariri reviewed political developments in Lebanon, as well as the situation in Syria and its regional impact. They also discussed efforts to fight terrorism and violent extremism in the region.

El-Sisi congratulated the Lebanese PM on the formation of the new government, expressing Egypt's hopes for its success to fulfil the aspirations of the Lebanese people for progress, security and stability.

El-Sisi expressed appreciation for Al-Hariri's keenness to participate in the LAS-EU summit in Sharm El-Sheikh, particularly as this is his first official foreign trip after assuming the post of prime minister of the new government.

The Egyptian president also reiterated his country's position which calls "for distancing Lebanon from regional conflicts, foremost for the interest of Lebanon, and in order to preserve the stability of the region and to prevent any foreign powers from tampering with the social peace of Arab states and from undermining their security."

The Lebanese PM stressed that his country values its historic and firm relations with Egypt.

He expressed his country's appreciation for Egypt's efforts in support of Lebanon in all areas, and said that Egypt is the cornerstone for preserving stability in Lebanon and the entire Arab region.

Al-Hariri also lauded Egypt for prioritising success in developmental areas, noting that Egypt is a model to be emulated by countries in the region.
