Egypt’s Court of Cassation, the country’s highest appeals court, has upheld prison terms against 66 people convicted of committing various violent offenses during the dispersal of a 2013 sit-in by supporters of ousted Islamist President Mohamed Morsi.

The court rejected on Thursday appeals by the 66 defendants, upholding prison sentences ranging from three to 15 years to life - 25 years.

The defendants are among 262 people who were sentenced by a criminal court in January 2018.

They faced charges including terrorizing and endangering the lives of the public, the murder of two policemen, attempted murder of a conscript and others, and vandalism during the dispersal.

Seventeen people at the time were sentenced to life in prison, 223 were given 15 years and another 22 were handed three years; the court acquitted 115 others accused in the case.

Today's verdicts are final and cannot be appealed.
