Basem Darwisch's Cairo Steps is performing in Rome on 29 March and in Milan on 30 with many well-known Egyptian musicians
Egyptian-German ensemble Cairo Steps, founded by composer and oud player Basem Darwisch, has invited many Egyptian musicians to join its upcoming tour in Italy.
They will perform in Italy on 29 March at the Accademia d'Egitto in Rome and on 30 March at the Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore in Milan.
Cairo Steps, who regularly plays in Germany, has listed many prominent Egyptian musicians, most involved in many separate projects, for their upcoming events, including pianist Rami Attallah, drummer Ra'fat Muhammad, bassist Karim Hossam, accordionistWael El Sayed,Ragy Kamal on Kanoun and Hany El-Sawaf on the riq, in addition to their usual Turkish nay and duduk player Rageed William.
They will also feature singer Ali El-Helbawi chanting Sufi improvisation, while their string section will include Jan Boshra (cello) and violinists Emad Azmy, Shereen Azmy, Ahmed Tarek, Shady Abdelsalam and Mahmoud Zakaria.
They will also be accompanied by sound engineer Mafdy Thabet.
Winners of the German Jazz Award 2018, alongside German band Quadro Nuevo, for the album Flying Carpet, the group has played concerts in prestigious venues in Germany, Egypt, and recently Kuwait and the UAE.
Cairo Steps, who frequently feature flutist Ines Abdel-Dayem, who is currently Egypt's culture minister, merges traditional oriental grooves and spiritual chants with modern jazz and classics.
They state that their vision is "crossing cultural, political and religious borders and building bridges between the Occident and the Orient."
