Lebanese drama Capernaum will be screened at Zamalek Cinema on Tuesday evening.

The drama, directed by Nadine Labaki, was nominated for Best Foreign Film at the Oscars this year, and also won the Jury Prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival.

Capernaum follows the travails of Zain, a malnourished Syrian boy who runs away from his family when his 11-year-old sister Sahar is sold into marriage.

The film tells a story of poverty and survival in Beirut's underclass, and won a 15-minute standing ovation at Cannes last year.

Labaki, 45, has arguably become the Lebanese culture scene's most prominent export.

Syrian refugee Zain Al Rafeea, who played the lead character, was recently resettled by the United Nations to Norway with his family.

Programme:
Tuesday 2 April, 7pm
Zamalek Cinema
