An Italian play titled Illusion will open the Sharm El-Sheikh Int’l Theatre Festival for Youth on 1 April.

The festival will run till 7 April in the South Sinai governorate of Sharm El-Sheikh, and will host 15 plays from 30 countries competing for various awards.

This marks the international debut for the play, a shadow theatre performance directed by Fabio Omodei, and performed by the Theatre Academy of Rome Sofia Amendolea.

Illusion is a story about love, loss and memory, while exploring the state of death as “the definitive conclusion of a regulated and ordered period of time,” as the synopsis reads.

The story is told through shadows and physical choreography, tackling a heavy subject in a light and surreal way.

Omodei is Artistic Director of the Roma Teatro Festival, a renowned international festival showcasing the best plays from European theatre academies.

He has directed plays that were staged in Warsaw, Moscow, London, Dublin, Brnò, and Prague, and has taught theatre in Poland, Budapest and Germany.

The Sofia Amendolea troupe have presented their original productions in Italy and internationally, with a repertoire that includes Pinocchio’s Machine, Wood Prison, as well as a staging of Macbeth and other renditions of classics.

The Sharm El-Sheikh Theatre Festival for Youth is supported by the ministries of culture, youth and sports and tourism, as well as the governorate of North Sinai and many local and international cultural authorities and private companies.
