A Giza misdemeanour court on Monday sentenced television presenters Wael Elebrashy and Mohamed El-Gheity to a suspended sentence of six months in prison for influencing investigations into a murder case.

The misdemeanour court sentenced the two TV hosts in absentia for influencing eyewitnesses and the course of investigations in the case known in the media as "the Madinat Nasr conscript murder.”

The case saw a judge charged with murder in May 2017 for allegedly killing a student in a fight in Cairo.

The student was completing his compulsory military service.

The trial concluded in January 2019 when the family of the victim reconciled with the defendant and the case was dropped.

The lawsuit against Elebrashy and El-Gheity was filed by the defendant's brother, who accused them of influencing the course of the investigation by presenting a negative image of him before the end of the official investigation.

Both El-Gheity and Elebrashy hosted the fiancée of the victim on their respective TV shows to talk about the incident, which she witnessed.

The pair were ordered to pay EGP2,000 bail each on Tuesday, in a first-degree ruling which can still be appealed.

In January, El-Gheity was sentenced to one year in prison, one year’s probation, and a EGP 3,000 fine for promoting debauchery, as a result of his interview with a homosexual man on talk show in September 2017.

He appealed against the sentence.
