The Bibliotheca Alexandrina will host the concert, which celebrates the centennial of the 1919 Revolution

The American University in Cairo’s band, featuring Nesma Mahfoub, Hazem Shaheen, and Shaheen’s band Eskendrella, will give a concert entitled “Once Upon a Time” as part of their celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the 1919 Revolution.

The name is inspired by a song by Egyptian musician Sayed Darwish, whose work will be presented at the event scheduled for 12 April at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Arts Center in Alexandria.

Directed by Tarek Elmahallawy, the concert will feature a series of Darwish's best-known patriotic songs.

The same concert was held last month in Cairo.

AUC is marking the 1919 Revolution all year, including by exploring rare recordings of certain composers.

Alexandrian Shaheen, 40, moved to Cairo and founded Eskenderella in 2005, playing at underground venues before gaining wider recognition.

Eskendrella “shifted between revivals of the nation's classic tunes and ventures into new compositions,” reads their bio section on their official Facebook page.

Nesma Mahgoub is known for performing the theme to the television series Ana Shahira, Ana Al-Khaaen.

Programme:
Friday 12 April, 7pm
Alexandria's Bibliotheca, Great Hall
