Egyptian prolific translator Bachir El-Sebaie dies

Bashir is best known for his translation of Henry Laurens multi-volumed book The Question of Palestine and Timothy Mitchell's seminal book Colonising Egypt


Egyptian translator Bachir El-Sebaie died in Cairo Sunday, 21 April, aged 75.

El-Sebaie, one of Egypt's most prolific and respected translators, translated from French, English and Russian. He translated more than 70 works across history and philosophy.

El-Sebaie was best known for translating Timothy Mitchell's book Colonising Egypt in 1990 and the French historian Henry Laurens's book series The Question of Palestine.

At the time of his death Bachir was working on translating the second volume of Henry Laurens's book "Oriental Crises", which was released in Paris March 2019 at the time of his death.

Sebaie translated the first volume of the book and it was published in May 2018 under the title "Oriental Crisies: The Oriental Issue and the Big Game 1786 - 1914."

Bachir, who was also a poet and known for his Marxist views, was born in Sharkia governorate in 1944 and graduated from Cairo University's faculty of Arts in 1966.
