The High Representative for the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) condemned on Sunday "in the strongest terms" the attacks in Sri Lanka's capital Colombo.

Miguel Moratinos said that "such heinous terrorist attacks that know no religion, country or ethnicity are unjustifiable regardless of against whomever and wherever they are being perpetrated."

"[Moratinos] stresses that today’s unspeakable terrorist attacks should not dissuade us from taking a collective stand against terrorism in all its forms and to continue to work to promote tolerance and respect of the other," UNAOC said in a statement.

"On behalf of UNAOC, the High Representative expresses his deepest condolences to the families of the victims and stresses his solidarity with the people and the government of Sri Lanka."

Eight bomb explosions, targeting churches and hotels near Colombo, resulted in the death of at least 207 people and the injury of hundreds.

The attacks are considered the most violent in the South Asian country since the end of its civil war a decade ago.
