Egyptian director's short 'Fakh' selected to compete at Film Critics Week during Cannes Festival 2019

Directed by Nada Riyadh, an Egyptian screenwriter and director, the film 'Fakh' (The Trap) will have it's world premiere during the Cannes Festival's Critics Weeks (La Semaine de la Critique)


Egyptian short film 'Fakh' (The Trap) has been selected to screen during theCritics Weeks (La Semaine de la Critique), a segment of the Cannes International Film Festival, which 72nd edition is scheduled to take place between 14 and 25 May, 2019.

Directed byNada Riyadh, an Egyptian screenwriter and director, the 20-minute film follows a young, unmarried couple who "retreats to the depth of a desolate run-down Egyptian seaside resort to make love. The power dynamic between them is tested when the girl reveals she wants their relationship to end," we read in the brief description of the short.

The Trap will compete within the Short Film Category, one of the segments of the Critics Week, the other segment being for feature films.

Having its world premiere at Cannes, Riyadh's film is the only entry from Egypt to the Critics Week, where over 20 films will compete in the Feature and Shorts categories.

The Trap is Nada Riyadh's second short film. The Egyptian screenwriter and director's debut documentary film (Happily Ever After) premiered at IDFA in 2016 and was later screened in more than 20 international film festivals.

"Her work mainly focuses on exploring the depth and complexity of the human psyche and relationships through the visual medium," we read in the filmmaker's biography published at the Cannes festival website.

Created in 1962 by the French Union of Film Critics as a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival, La Semaine de la Critique focuses on discovering new talents, revealing first and second feature films. Today the Union is composed of 244 members, who give their awards for cinema, television, DVD/Blu-ray releases and literary works. They also take part in numerous festival juries whose deliberations are public, such as Arras, Bordeaux, Biarritz, Poitiers, Toulouse, Trouville and Paris.

This year, it will be the 58th edition ofLa Semaine de la Critique held within the Cannes International Film Festival. The Critics Week will take place between 15 and 23 May while the 72nd Cannes festival will open on 14 May and continue until 25 May.
