The political group, the Revolution Youth Union, calls for a million man march for Tuesday during the "Revolution Continues Week" that started Friday with tens of thousands of Egyptians marching towards Tahrir Square.

On the year anniversary of Egypt's revolution, 25 January, demonstrators marched to pressure for the ruling military council step down immediately, for those accused of killing protesters to be tried and to assert that the revolution is still alive and necessary.

The union accused the ruling military council, the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) of using Mubarak-era policies to counter the revolution’s demands, such as killing, arresting, torturing and beating protesters. The group claims that state violence worsened the country’s economic conditions.

The Revolution Youth Union will participate in a mass afternoon prayer Saturday on Qasr El Nile Bridge, where many protesters were killed by police forces exactly one year ago on the Friday of Rage.

Later, a number of demonstrations are planned, parting from the doorstep of the home of some of the uprising’s slain protesters and ending in Tahrir Square.

Official estimates report at least 840 deaths during the uprising at the hands of Mubarak’s security personnel, most of whom were killed on 28 January 2011.

Many consider that date the turning point: originally 25 January was simply a mass protest – one of the largest since Mubarak came into power. That Friday, under the cover of a state-mandated communications blackout, the police attacked, teargassed and shot protesters. This escalated the demonstrations into a full-blown popular uprising, which forced president Hosni Mubarak to step down on 11 February 2011.

Throughout the past months several courts acquitted police officers accused of killing January’s peaceful protesters, which deepened public disapproval over the lenient, toothless trials.
